While all consoles bar PS2 recorded a month-over-month sales increase in August, total hardware sales declined 25 per cent year-over-year to $297.60 million, according to the NPD Group.
PS3 sales rose 72 per cent over July levels, to 210,000 units, boosted by the introduction of price cuts across the PS3 range on August 18. A number of retailers also began selling the new PS3 Slim model a week ahead of its official September 1 release date.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the sole platform to record a year-over-year monthly sales rise during June, the NPD Group reported on Thursday.
Sales of the console hit 240,600 units, comfortably putting it ahead of Sony’s platforms. PS3, PSP and PS2 moved 164,700, 163,500 and 152,700 units respectively.
Nintendo systems remained ahead of the pack though, with the platform holder shifting 361,700 Wii units and 766,500 DS systems.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai says that rival platform holders Microsoft and Nintendo have approached the current console generation with a five year lifecycle in mind.
Hirai also told the Guardian that a focus on attracting mainstream consumers at the expense of core gamers early in a system’s lifecycle could backfire over an extended period of time.
