  • MS Financials Show Xbox Div Profit

    Microsoft has posted its earning for it’s fiscal fourth quarter of 2008, posting the full fiscal year results alongside it. The company on a whole posted a $60.42 billion revenue for the year, up 18% over 2007.

  • NPD: Wii Overtakes 360 in US

    According to NPD Industry Analyst Anita Frazier, "The Wii has taken the lead in total sales of current generation console hardware at 10.9 million units sold at retail life-to-date in the U.S."

    The Wii sold 666.7K units in June 2008, the NPD stats for the month reveal, compared to 405.5K for the PS3 and 219.8K for the Xbox 360. The Nintendo DS sold 783K units for the month, while the PSP mustered sales of 337.4K.

  • Smash Bros. Brawl Hits Back to Top Australian Chart

    Super Smash Bros. Brawl leapfrogged Mario Kart Wii in the Australian software chart during the week ended July 13, having surrendered the top spot to the Nintendo racer the week prior.

    Nintendo platform titles dominated the top ten, Wii games taking the top five places and DS titles occupying sixth, seventh and eighth.

  • Persona 4 Storms Japanese Chart

    The latest title in Atlus’ big-in-Japan high-school demon-slaying RPG series entered the Japanese software chart at No1 during the week ended July 13 after shifting almost 200,000 copies.

    Wii Fit took second place with 30,000 sales, followed in third by new DS title Densetsu no Starfi Taketsu.

    Mario Kart Wii came in at No4, while Daigasso Band Brothers for DS slipped from the top spot to No5.

  • PS3 Platinum Range to Hit PAL Territories on August 1

    SCEE president David Reeves has confirmed that a Platinum range of PS3 games will launch in PAL territories on August 1.

    Individual titles from the new value range, which will feature first and third party software including Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Assassin’s Creed, will retail for €29.99.

    Speaking at a media gathering in Los Angeles, Reeves also confirmed that major upcoming titles MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 will be released in SCEE territories on the same date as in the US.

  • 80GB PS3 Heading to All PAL Territories

    Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that an 80GB PS3 will be released in all PAL territories on August 27.

    The new unit, which will cost £299 (€399), will replace the existing 40GB model. The recommended retail price of the 40GB PS3, which is expected to be out of stock by the time the new model launches, will remain at £299.

  • No European PS3 Video Download Store Until 2009

    Sony has announced that the PS3 video download store will not launch in PAL territories until next year, according to GameSpot.

    "This will not come to the PAL markets this year, but Sir Howard Stringer has made the commitment that non-games will come to all regions in due course and it will,” said SCEE boss David Reeves.

  • Prince of Persia Delivers at Ubisoft’s E3 Showing

    While many of its titles were previously shown at Ubidays press events, and in some cases last year’s E3 Media Summit, Ubisoft used this year’s show to debut its new Prince of Persia redux. And the Prince has never looked better.

    “He"s a new prince,” said Ben Mattes, producer of the game at Ubisoft. “We look at this franchise like Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights. He"s a rogue warrior on a quest to save the world. In fact, when the game starts he"s not even a prince.”

  • Miyamoto: “We’re Making Pikmin”

    IGN is reporting that with three words, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed the return of his GameCube gardening strategy franchise. Those three words: “we’re making Pikmin.”

    According to the report, the statement was made casually at Nintendo’s E3 developer roundtable on Wednesday evening. No further information beyond that short sentence was made. The last entry in the Pikmin franchise, Pikmin 2 (pictured), was released in the United States in 2004.

    We are now getting close to finishing LittleBigPlanet – it’s due for release in October so that doesn’t leave us much time. At the moment we’re basically making proper seat of the pants last minute changes and panicking about everything. There’s a lot of pressure to live up to but the game’s looking really good and it’s shaping into something that I know we’re going to be proud of here at Media Molecule, which is great because when we first pitched it we weren’t even quite sure of what we were going to create...

    While the games industry is “finally gaining the respect we deserve,” ESA CEO Michael Gallagher still had five key points that he felt must be kept in mind, according to a recap of his E3 keynote reported by Kotaku.

    The first point was to “remember the base,” to keep in mind that even as the industry actively seeks new markets it should continue to provide for the core gamer market.
