    Game Critics: Fallout 3 Best of Show at E3
    A group of game critics have dubbed Fallout 3 the best game of July"s E3 Media and Business Summit 2008.

    Bethesda"s upcoming multiplatform RPG was voted Best of Show, beating out fellow nominees Gears of War 2, LittleBigPlanet, Mirror"s Edge and Spore, the Game Critics group announced Tuesday.

    Fallout 3 also won Best RPG of the show, edging out Chrono Trigger DS, Dragon Age: Origins and Sonic Chronicles.

    Australia"s Auran Games announced Tuesday that it will finally be shutting down the servers for the embattled player vs. player PC online game, Fury.

    "We have reached our time limit to find a solution that would help us keep the Fury servers open," stated Auran CEO Tony Hilliam on the game"s official forums.

    "Sadly, no solution has been found and so we have no alternative than to shut the servers down in 48 hours."

    "Sensational" MGS4 Lifts Konami Q1

    Thanks to a strong software lineup led by Metal Gear Solid 4, Tokyo-based Konami has posted strong sales and profit figures for the first quarter ended June 30.

    MGS4, released on June 12, drove quarterly revenues of 70.8 billion yen ($654.3 million), up 16.7 percent from Q1 2007"s 60.7 billion yen, the company said Tuesday.

    Operating income was 11.6 billion yen for the quarter, up 65.6 percent.

    The PlayStation 3-exclusive MGS4 had a worldwide simultaneous release during the quarter, shipping over 3 million units day one.

    Edge parent and Golden Joystick Awards organizer Future has extended its media partnership with U.K. broadcaster Channel 4.

    The broadcaster has launched two talent-finding initiatives this month, asking up-and-coming developers to submit ideas for mobile and Flash games for the chance to win a Golden Joystick Award, cash prizes and industry exposure.

    Deca Sports Hits 700K Shipped

    Deca Sports for Wii has shipped over 700,000 units worldwide as of August 1, publisher Hudson Entertainment announced Tuesday.

    The title, made up of 10-minigames, released on May 13 this year in the U.S., and is also available in Europe (where it"s called Sports Island) and Japan (Deca Sporta).

    Backed by the Adidas brand name, Deca Sports is targeted toward casual gamers.

    India a Future Dev Hub for Sony

    As development costs rise, Sony Computer Entertainment is eyeing India as a center for its game development efforts, a report said Tuesday.

    SCE country manager Atindriya Bose told DNA India that Sony wants to increase its game production business in India, where the cost of making games is relatively low.

    According to the report, Sony is transferring tech from its London studio to India, training locals and offering dev kits on loan.

    PS3 Version of Left 4 Dead Not in Production

    "There"s no PS3 version currently in production," a Valve spokesperson told CVG following rumors that EA was working on a PS3 edition of multiplayer shooter Left 4 Dead.

    Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi previously told the site that the company was not a PS3 developer and that it was only developing the game for Xbox 360 and PC.

    Soul Calibur IV Debuts at No1 in UK Chart

    The title is the first in the series to hit the top spot in the All Formats Chart since Soul Calibur II for GameCube, PS2 and Xbox back in September 2003. The Xbox 360 version of the game accounted for 56 percent of opening week sales.

    Nintendo’s Wii Fit dropped one place to No2 despite a 35 percent rise in weekly sales, while sales of Mario Kart Wii, a non-mover at No3, were up 25 percent.

    THQ’s Wall-E fell two places to No4, while the publisher’s hardware-bundled Big Beach Sports moved up five places to No5.

    Crosswords DS Takes Amazon.com Top Spot

    Wii titles take three of the top five and half of the top ten places in the latest Amazon.com All Formats chart, but it’s Crosswords DS for the firm’s handheld that grabs the top spot.

    The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of EA’s Madden NFL 09 chart in fifth and eighth ahead of the game’s release next week, while Namco’s Soul Calibur IV, which topped the UK software chart this week, places in sixth and ninth for PS3 and 360 respectively.

    Xbox 360 FFXIII Asian Release Confirmed

    Speaking at a recent Microsoft game exhibition in Taipei, Microsoft Taiwan head Grace Chou announced that Final Fantasy XIII will be released for Xbox 360 in Taiwan.

    According to Kotaku, Chou said that a decision hadn’t been made regarding which localized version will be launched in Asian territories.

    The site also speculates that the news could mean that Japanese 360 owners may be able to import the game following its release in Asia.

    You know what?   I’ve spent hours trying to write this review;  trying to figure out how I’m going to preserve my precious journalistic integrity while reviewing Jesse Schell’s The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses.    I’ve been looking for ways to pan it, to do what all good critics do: critique... I can’t.  This is unequivocally the best book on game design I’ve ever read.

    Blizzard is planning a new “Blizzard Accounts” system that will allow players to have a single identity across the company’s entire new games portfolio, according to a report on MTV Multiplayer.

    Midway has posted its financial results for the quarter ending June 30th, 2008, announcing a net loss of Joe Keiser4.8 million.

    Saints Row Wii Would be Too Controversial

    One reason that THQ developer Volition won"t be bringing Saints Row to Nintendo Wii is because it would cause too much controversy on the motion-centric machine.

    Producer Dan Sutton told Edge sister site CVG that he"s "sure" a Wii version of Saints Row would cause controversy.

    "With games like ours you get much more controversy when you add motion controls like you saw with Manhunt 2," he said.
