Preview: Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway

That Brothers in Arms finds it difficult to hit the right tone has always been evident from the eccentric double-act that presents it to the press. On the one side you have Colonel John Antal, military advisor to Gearbox Software, commending the game’s accuracy, detailing the extensive research into the exact weather conditions on September 22 1944 in the Dutch town of Veghel. “It rained that day,” Antal says. “We have rain in our game.”

Godfather II Could “Change Rules” of Sandbox

Electronic Arts confirmed Friday that The Godfather II videogame will be arriving in February 2009, complete with strategy elements.
2006’s original Godfather game was heavily inspired by the free-roaming gameplay of Grand Theft Auto. Godfather II will incorporate an open-world environment as well, but also adds the “Don’s View,” which EA describes as a “strategy meta-game” that allows players to see the world of Godfather II and manage the family’s growth on a broad scale.

id “No Longer Makes Decisions Around PC”

Credited with titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, id Software’s John Carmack is synonymous with best-of-breed PC gaming.
But these days, he says, the burgeoning console market is id’s focus.
“…The ground truth is just that the sales numbers on the PC are not what they used to be and are not what they are on the consoles,” the programmer told Tom’s Hardware.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says EA and Warner Bros. have missed out on Aug 9, 2008 at 1:09 AM00 million in sales by deciding not to release a Dark Knight videogame alongside the $400 million box office smash movie.
While the Dark Knight movie has been breaking box office records and associated merchandise has been selling like hot cakes, EA, which has the rights to make a game based on the property, and franchise owner Warner Bros. have ensured that, for the first time in the film-franchise"s history, a Batman movie has released without a videogame attached.

The premise behind Spicy Horse’s highly accessible, episodic game is that the tales of the Brothers Grimm weren’t quite dark enough – sanitised beyond credibility. Following a puppet-theatre retelling of each tale, you take on the role of one of the two brothers in order to make the tales yet more filthy and macabre, tainting the environments simply by moving through the scenes.

DS Closes Gap on PSP in Japan

Sony’s portable has enjoyed an extended run at the top of the Japanese hardware chart and continued to lead sales during the week ended August 3, although the gap between the system and Nintendo’s handheld was cut from more than 10,000 units to less than 4,000.

Guitar Hero Cheating Music Labels?

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter strongly disagrees with Warner Music"s chief exec, who earlier today claimed that music labels are getting the short end of music licensing deals for games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
Pachter told Edge on Thursday, "[Warner Music chief Edgar Bronfman] misses the point that there is significant value added by Activision, and his comments reflect his lack of understanding about the business."

Fable II Arriving in October

The high-profile Xbox 360 action RPG Fable II will launch on October 21 at U.S. retail, and October 24 in developer Lionhead"s U.K. homeland.
Release dates for the rest of the world will be announced in "coming months."
On August 13, Microsoft will be offering pre-ordering customers free access to Fable II "Pub Games." Gamers who don"t pre-order can pay Aug 8, 2008 at 1:09 AM0 to download the title via Xbox Live Marketplace.
The "casino-style" Pub Games title lets gamers earn gold and treasure prior to the game"s release.
