It’s been a while, but they’re back. Actually, it’s been more than a while: it’s been a good 17 years since Street Fighter II, and nine years since Street Fighter III. In that time the 2D fighter has been somewhat marginalised, and players’ expectations have changed. In this context it’s a minor miracle that Yoshinori Ono and his team have not only stuck to a clear vision of how to take the series forward in 2D, but that Capcom has been able to excite people about it to such a degree.

Tiger Woods Makes Chart-Topping UK Debut

EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 teed off with the biggest launch week for any game in the series to take the UK chart top spot.
The game launched across five different platforms, with sales of the Xbox 360 version accounting for 33 percent of all units shifted. The PS3 and Wii versions accounted for 32 percent and 28 percent of the total sold respectively, with the remainder for PS2 and PSP.

THQ Announces Dismissal of Most WWE Claims

THQ has announced that the Connecticut Superior Court has dismissed most of the claims made against the publisher and THQ/JAKKS Pacific by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
Of note, the court dismissed all claims brought by WWE against THQ and THQ/JAKKS Pacific suggesting that “the videogame license between WWE and THQ/JAKKS Pacific LLC was void or voidable based upon JAKKS Pacific Inc."s alleged bribery of WWE"s licensing agent Stanley Shenker and employee James Bell”.

PAX Orgs to Address Overcrowding

The fifth Penny Arcade Expo attracted record attendance figures this year, with 58,500 people showing up for the Seattle-based convention.
"Overall it [PAX 2008] was a huge success,” Robert Khoo, PAX"s director of business development, told Big Download. “The challenge each and every year is to keep the community and cultural feel of the show intact, and I really think we pulled it off.

THQ Opens New Shanghai, China Office

Publisher THQ has announced the opening of a new office in Shanghai, China.
The office will be used to “spearhead the expansion of local partnerships to develop and publish both online and packaged games for distribution in China and around the world”, the company said in a statement.

Vivendi Posts Q2 Gains

Vivendi has reported a 0.3 percent profit rise for the second quarter of the financial year.
Profit, which the company refers to as adjusted net income, was up to €757 million for the quarter, while revenues jumped 15.1 percent to €5.988 billion and operating profit rose 3.2 percent to €1.364 billion.
The company noted the performance of World of Warcraft as one of its operating highlights of the first half of the year.

Nintendo Shares Continue to Rise

Nintendo shares rose significantly for the second day running following the company’s increased profit forecast last week.
On Friday Nintendo raised its full-year profit forecast by 26 percent because of higher-than-anticipated Wii and DS sales, prompting its shares to leap 8.4 percent on the Osaka Securities Exchange, their biggest jump in nine months.

Microsoft Slashes Xbox 360 Prices in Japan

Microsoft will dramatically cut the price of its Xbox 360 family of consoles in Japan in a bid to remain competitive in the region.
As of September 11, the price of the Xbox 360 Arcade will be reduced by almost 30 percent, from 27,800 yen to 19,800 yen, making it cheaper than Nintendo"s 25,000 yen Wii, Microsoft announced on Monday.
The Elite 360 will also see a 17 percent price cut from 47,800 yen to 39,800 yen.

Monumental Games Reveals Studio Growth

Nottingham, UK-based MMO developer Monumental Games has seen its staff headcount grow from 35 employees to over 60 in the last six months, the company has announced.
The news comes as the firm ramps up development on its flagship MMO title Football Superstars and begins work on two as-yet-undisclosed projects.
