  • Sony Targets 150 Million PS3 Sales

    Hirai told the Financial Times that Sony is targeting 150 million PS3 sales during the first nine years of the console’s lifecycle.

    Released in 1994, the original PlayStation has sold 102m units, while the PlayStation 2, now in its ninth year on the market, has sold in excess of 140m units.

    "It"s not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I"ve seen that movie already," Hirai said.

  • Wii and DS Games Rule European Charts

    Super Smash Bros. Brawl retained the top spot in both countries during the week ended July 13, while Wii Fit and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness scored top five entries in both charts.

    In total seven Wii games charted across the two top tens, along with eleven DS titles and two PS3 games, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV, both in Spain.

  • Rebellion Acquires Razorworks

    Razorworks, the studio behind the Ford Racing series of titles for handhelds and home consoles, has been acquired by Rebellion Games.

    Established in 1996, the 30-strong Razorworks team will now join Rebellion’s Oxford studio.

    The move came after Silverstar-owned publisher Empire Interactive announced plans to sell off the development studio in a bid to reduce its staff headcount and cut costs.

    The trouble with E3, is that it’s trying to be too many things, and isn’t much good at any of them. It’s a product showcase, a media circus, a business and trading forum, a social event, a debate. But it’s also none of those things.

    There was plenty of old, and some things new, at Capcom’s spacious and always-crowded E3 booth. The star attraction was a playable build of Resident Evil 5. As has been the case with other much-hyped sequels at this year’s show (Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 and Street Fighter IV), this blockbuster delivered. Capcom had half of one of its three rooms dedicated to RE5.

    Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment looks to make up for the lack of any Dark Knight summer movie tie-in with this fall’s LEGO Batman: The Videogame. Developed by TT Games, which has had consistent success with LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Indiana Jones games, this title is shaping up to be the best Batman game ever. Who needs a movie license when you can get the adorable toy versions of Batman, Robin, the Joker and the Penguin?

While Wii games take five places, the Xbox 360 version of EA’s NCAA Football 09 charts at No4 and Atlus’ Arcana Heart for PS2 is at No6. Metal Gear Solid 4, Guitar Hero: On Tour and Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice round off the top ten.

  • Sony “Looking Into” Native PSP Store

    Sony’s John Koller has said that the company is examining the possibility of bringing the PlayStation Store to PSP, which would mean that users wishing to download content to the handheld wouldn’t require a PS3 or PC to do so.

    "Having a native store on the portable is something we"re looking into," Koller told Pocket Gamer.
