Good Old Games Gets Unreal

Under a new deal with Epic Games, online games retailer Good Old Games is now selling select titles from the Unreal franchise DRM-free.
Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition are currently available, with Unreal II: The Awakening and Unreal Tournament 2004 to follow. In addition to being DRM-free, Good Old Games ensures its versions of these games are compatible with modern Windows operating systems.

Koei, Tecmo Formalize Merger

Koei and Tecmo have issued a joint, Japanese-language press release stating the formal details of their merger.
Reporting on the release, Reuters writes that under the deal Koei will take over Tecmo in a stock agreement worth 20 billion yen (UShttp://www.mmoabc.com/a_8a8080d21db38c6e011db38ccfce001b./Koei-Tecmo-Formalize-Merger.htm06m, £137m). This is about twice the estimated valuation of Square Enix’s earlier rejected attempt to take over Tecmo.

Skate 2: Build Your Own Park

Fine game though it was, Skate did a rather cruel thing. It held out the promise of exploring a sprawling city, but then fixed you to four small wheels easily thwarted by stairwells and steep inclines. Skate 2, blessedly, allows you to step off your skateboard – you can even leave it behind – allowing you to clamber all over the city of New San Vanelona.

While MotorStorm isn’t the prime candidate from PS3’s natal period for retrospective denouncement by overexuberant critics – that dubious honour is perhaps reserved for Resistance: Fall of Man – Evolution would still have to live up to its name to make its sequel pass muster now that Sony’s platform has bedded in.

Mad Catz Has Record Quarter

Accessories manufacturer Mad Catz has announced record sales for the second quarter of its fiscal 2009.
Sales were up 52.8 percent, from Nov 19, 2008 at 1:34 AM6.9m (£11.3m) to http://www.mmoabc.com/a_8a8080d21db38c6e011db38cc5380018./Mad-Catz-Has-Record-Quarter.htm5.8m (£17m), versus the same quarter is fiscal 2008. Gross profits increased even more, rising from $5m (£3.3m) to $7.7m (£5.1m)—an increase of 55.9 percent. This allowed the company to report a net income of $900k (£600k) for the quarter, compared to the previous year’s Nov 19, 2008 at 1:34 AM.2m (£800k) loss.

Crytek Moves into Seoul

Crytek, the creators of Crysis and Far Cry, have opened up a subsidiary branch in Seoul, South Korea.
The new subsidiary, Crytek Ltd, has already begun operations and has the primary goal of extending Crytek’s business into Asian markets, beginning with engine licensing. The company will be led by Young Mok Park, who was formerly a head of business strategy at NCSoft.

National Geographic Opens Game Division

National Geographic has announced that it has formed and launched National Geographic Games (NGG), a branch of the organization that will both publish and develop game content for all platforms.

According to the organization, the goal of National Geographic Games is to create a new way to reach consumers and families with a message of caring about the planet. The group will be led by vice-president of the Nataional Geographic Ventures extended platform group Paul Levine, with daily operations to be handled by former Take-Two VP of publishing Chris Mate. -

Mama Kills is an unauthorized flash-based web game that asks the player to cut off a chicken’s head, pluck its feathers and pull out its giblets.
It’s a parody of Taito’s casual DS game Cooking Mamma and was launched by animal rights advocate PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The organisation has condemned Taito’s game for overusing a large number of animals in its cooking minigames. -
