    Review: Pure

If imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery, by rights there should be a considerable number of employees at EA Canada blushing with modesty. Pure is hugely derivative of seminal trick snowboarding game SSX and its increasingly gravity-defying sequels, and while this lack of innovation means that ultimately Black Rock Studio’s title will never be held in such high regard, its strict adherence to the formula has not gone unrewarded.

Why Do People Want to Leave WoW?

Eleven million people are registered to play World of Warcraft globally. Its gameplay is solid. Its community is enormous. Its customer service is unmatched. And it was the key driver in the biggest merger the games industry has ever seen. It"s the inarguable king of MMORPGs, particularly in the West, and rules the ubiquitous PC platform.

So why are people constantly looking for the first opportunity to ditch this game?

Ballmer Denies 360 Price Cut an Act of Desperation

Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer has refuted claims that the recent Xbox 360 price cut is a sign of a console maker desperate to regain lost sales traction.

Asked by The San Jose Mercury News if Microsoft cut the price because it had "run out of ideas to boost sales," Ballmer replied, "No, that"s the craziest thing I"ve ever heard anybody say. All consoles start at higher prices. They always come down through the long cycle."

Tiga Calls For UK Dev Tax Credits

British developers assoc. Tiga today called for a helping hand from the UK govt.

Richard Wilson, CEO of Tiga, said, “The credit crunch, turmoil in the financial markets and declining economic activity constrain a government’s fiscal room for manoeuvre; but constraint is not the same as paralysis. Just as the Ontario administration is supporting its games developers in the midst of difficult economic conditions, so the UK government should back its video games industry.

    Fils-Aime: MotionPlus Wasn't an Afterthought

When Nintendo announced the Wii MotionPlus peripheral earlier this year, many wondered why the company didn"t include the superior gyroscopic technology in the Wii controller in the first place.

Turns out the tech was too expensive when the Wii launched in 2006.

    Insanity of Game Stocks Dump

Game companies suffered disproportionately last week, as panicked investors sought to take what profits they could from companies like Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard.

Game companies are popular with institutional investors, who were selling stocks in droves last week, wiping billions off the collective value of the game companies. Michael Pachter at Wedbush said, “Sell first, ask questions later. It"s an insane overreaction."

    Review: Viva Pinata 2

Nurture your garden, raise animals, give them names, and then feed them to each other: despite the sunshine and green grass, Viva Piñata has always been quietly shocking. Sure, this is a game that lets you make friends with a Fudgehog – but if that relationship doesn’t work out, you can also batter him over the head with a shovel and watch as his insides are picked apart by his furry playmates.

  • Review: Reset Generation

    Review: Reset Generation

Reset Generation is a game that shouldn’t work. Its kitchen-sink approach to design – piling layer after layer of influence and industry tropes reaching back decades – has been the downfall of countless games before. The introduction of chance elements on top of what might be otherwise finely tuned strategy design should have tipped the game’s scales out of the player’s hands and toward maddeningly cheap victories.
