Midway Chicago Studio Head Departs

Mike Bilder, head of Midway Chicago, has left the company for a senior management role at another Chicago-based developer, according to Kotaku.
"We are evaluating internal and external candidates for the role, and both Blitz: The League II and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, as well as other projects in the Chicago studio, are on track for successful launches," a company rep told the site.

GTA IV Officially Headed to PC

Take-Two publishing label Rockstar Games has announced that a PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV will be released on November 18 and 21 in North America and Europe, respectively.
"We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. "The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can"t wait for people to play it."

Prepare for WAR on Sept. 18

Developer Mythic Entertainment and Electronic Arts have pinned down a date for their highly-anticipated MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
Virginia-based Mythic will open WAR"s North American, European and Oceanic servers on September 18.
EA said the game has been in development for three years.
The game will adopt a multi-tiered subscription model: Aug 7, 2008 at 1:08 AM4.99 monthly, $41.97 for three months (Aug 7, 2008 at 1:08 AM3.99 per month) or $77.94 for six months (Aug 7, 2008 at 1:08 AM2.99 per month).

Turner Looks to Sell GameTap

Turner"s online gaming site GameTap is up for sale, according to a financial report from parent Time Warner.
"The current year quarter included an Aug 7, 2008 at 1:08 AM8 million noncash impairment of GameTap as a result of Turner"s decision to sell its online videogame business," read Time Warner"s second quarter earnings release on Wednesday.
A GameTap rep told Edge on Wednesday that no final agreement with any specific suitor has been established.

Havok Unleashed on Microsoft

Microsoft has signed a "perpetual licensing agreement" that will make the Havok physics engines available to Microsoft Game Studios and its development partners.
The agreement, announced Wednesday, involves Havok"s physics, animation and behavior products, as well as future products such as Havok Cloth and Havok Destruction.
Microsoft developers that license Havok physics will automatically receive Havok animation as part of the deal, the companies said.

Namco Bandai Q1 Operating Profit Tumbles 66%

Operating income for the first quarter ended June 30, 2008, fell from 4.47 billion yen a year ago to 1.53 billion yen, Namco Bandai announced Wednesday.
Net profit also fell 63 percent to 1.02 billion yen as revenue declined 6.4 percent to 90 billion yen.

Sega Sammy Posts 10.2bn Yen Q1 Operating Loss

Sega parent Sega Sammy Holdings posted an operating loss of 10.29 billion yen and a net loss of 10.5 billion yen for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, while net sales fell 21.8 percent to 74.6 billion yen.
However, sales in the company’s consumer business segment (home videogame software and toys) were up 90 percent year-over-year to 30.5 billion yen, helping the division reduce its operating loss from 7.2 billion yen to 4.1 billion yen.

Six Degrees Games Nets $7 Million Funding

Virtual world publisher Six Degrees Games has secured $7 million in series A equity financing led by Clearstone Venture Partners and Prism VentureWorks.
The funds will support the product development, launch and distribution of Action AllStars, an original sports-themed virtual world designed for six to 14 year-olds, but open to all ages.
The project is currently in closed beta. and further details will become available over the next several months.

Spacetime Studios Halves Staff

Spacetime Studios has been forced to significantly reduce its staff headcount while it self-funds its operations as it continues to search for a publishing deal for science-fiction MMO Blackstar.
“Our studio cannot survive at its current burn rate without a publishing deal, so we face a necessary (though very difficult and painful) decision," the company said in a statement on its website.

"Sensational" MGS4 Lifts Konami Q1

Thanks to a strong software lineup led by Metal Gear Solid 4, Tokyo-based Konami has posted strong sales and profit figures for the first quarter ended June 30.
MGS4, released on June 12, drove quarterly revenues of 70.8 billion yen ($654.3 million), up 16.7 percent from Q1 2007"s 60.7 billion yen, the company said Tuesday.
Operating income was 11.6 billion yen for the quarter, up 65.6 percent.
The PlayStation 3-exclusive MGS4 had a worldwide simultaneous release during the quarter, shipping over 3 million units day one.
