Lich King Sales Top 2.8m
World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, has become the fastest-selling PC game of all time with 2.8 million units sold in its first 24 hours of availability, developer Blizzard said Thursday.
The record was previously held by the last WoW expansion, The Burning Crusade, which sold 2.4 million units in its first 24 hours when it launched in January 2007.
Blizzard said it drew the sales figures from internal company records and key distribution partners.
As of noon EST, Activision Blizzard shares were up 4.59 percent to $9.80 on the news.
Lich King released in North America and Europe on November 13, and across the rest of the world a few days later.
Around 15,000 stores worldwide held midnight launches for the game.
Bob McKenzie, SVP of merchandising at GameStop said in a statement, "After a single day of availability, Wrath of the Lich King is already the bestselling PC game of 2008 at GameStop and ranks as one of our top-selling products so far this year,"
Prior to the launch of Lich King, WoW boasted 11 million subscribers.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said he"s "grateful" for the player support.
