"Not a Whole Lot More" Wii Add-Ons Coming
Wii Fit"s balance board. Wii Zapper. Wii Wheel. Wii Speak. Wii MotionPlus.
Is there no end to the parade of Wii peripherals?
"Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now," Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata told the Wall Street Journal. "We might think up some more, and we might make them if we do, but we don"t have any plans to release a whole lot more."
While the peripheral business can be hit-and-miss, Nintendo has been able to introduce some worthwhile add-ons. Wii Fit and its balance board are proven worldwide hits, and developers are creating games that will utilize the accessory. The Wii Wheel that came with Mario Kart Wii also gets the job done (although the Wii Zapper leaves something to be desired).
At E3 in July, Nintendo announced the Wii MotionPlus, an add-on device for current Wii Remotes that is supposed to make the controllers more accurate.
"There will be games that will be enhanced by the Wii MotionPlus as well as games that can only be played with it," said Iwata. "Users will need four if they have four controllers, but we"re going to try to offer it for as little as possible.
"We haven"t announced the price yet, but the cost of making the Wii Motion Plus is not that much, so I think we can make it very affordable."
