Sony: Internal Development More Collaborative

"...Before, we were part of each regional organization of Sony Computer Entertainment, so we were a little bit at arms’ length, and didn’t necessarily share information from an early stage," Yoshida admitted the "semi-official" PS3 blog ThreeSpeech recentlyBut, he said that following the formation of SCE Worldwide Studios in 2005, the company began making collaboration between studios a priority. According to Yoshida, he and Harrison made an effort to bring studios closer despite being thousands of miles apart geographically.
"...We have been sharing our technology and developing a common infrastructure," he said. "After two-and-a-half years, the distance between the London Studio and Foster City in the US might as well be as close as the distance between London and Liverpool. I may be exaggerating, but we feel as if that is already happening."
SCE Worldwide Studios also includes Sony Santa Monica, Bigbig Studios, Evolution Studios, Polyphony Digital, Zipper Interactive, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Sony Online Entertainment and others.
The original PlayStation and the PS2 were huge successes thanks in large part to the support of third-parties. And while third-party support for PS3 is still strong, third-party exclusives are becoming less common. Yoshida, who oversees all first-party development, said that first-party games are more important than ever, as third-parties are under "pure economic pressure" to bring games to multiple platforms to maximize revenues and mitigate skyrocketing development costs.
"...Because we know that is the trend, we, as a company, can invest in our first-party studios; in terms of exclusive titles, our role becomes more important."
