GameTap Hands Back Myst Online

ImageThe embattled game Myst Online: Uru Live has a shaky history. Most recently, Turner-owned GameTap announced in February that it would drop the game after a year due to "business reasons." Prior to that, Ubisoft canned the game while in beta.

But Myst Online refuses to die. GameTap boss Rick Sanchez confirmed a report in The Spokesman-Review"s tech blog that said his company has given the rights for Myst Online back to creator Cyan Worlds, free of charge.

Sanchez said, "While we can"t comment on the specific aspects of the deal, Cyan Worlds has been a great partner to GameTap. This agreement allows Cyan and the fans the opportunity to continue to enjoy this rich universe that has become a second home to many of its inhabitants."

The Spokesman-Review said that "if a commercially successful revival comes about, the two companies have an agreement on how each will be compensated."

For now, it"s still unclear just how long of a commitment Cyan will make toward development of Myst Online.

However, the relaunch of the game will reportedly allow users to create their own content.

Cyan Worlds CEO Rand Miller said he expects to charge gamers around $25 for six months, which would go towards server costs.

The date of the relaunch is to be determined.
